Green Gifts for Mother's Day and the Earth

If you're stuck for Mother's Day gift ideas this year we've found a great way to do good by your mom and Mother Nature.

A program called HopeLine run by telecommunications giant Verizon collects out of date and no longer used cell phones, batteries and accessories at its nationwide locations. Some phones and accessories are recycled, while others are donated to women and families that need a safe way to communicate with family, counsellors and employers.

The proceeds from recycling the old phones go to local shelters and non-profit organizations that support prevention and awareness of domestic violence.

Recently, the program received some high profile attention from Hollywood advocates for women's rights like Law & Order star Mariska Hargitay, whose Joyful Heart Foundation accepted a $50,000 donation from Verizon.

The case studies on how this program has helped families in crisis are heart-warming, and if that weren't enough, the HopeLine program spreads the message about the benefits of recycling wireless devices and accessories through its green initiatives.

So instead of giving your mom a new sweater, a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates this Sunday, donate your old cell phones in her honor, and feel good about helping victims of domestic abuse and the environment.
