Cameron Diaz
Actively involved green actress
This Prius-driving actress, who has been on almost every hot, sexy or most beautiful list there is, is also known for her political outspokenness and dedication to environmentally sustainable living. Unlike the usual stereotype of a (former) model, she recycles, uses offsets for carbon neutral travel and is mindful of choosing beneficial products, like those that contain recycled materials.
Friend of Gore
When former VP and current green celeb Al Gore recruited 1,000 people to take his global warming slideshow training, many were surprised to see that Diaz not only attended, but actively participated by asking questions and staying around for evening events with the others.
Diaz then joined Gore to announce the initiative Save Our Selves (SOS) - The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis, kicking off with a 24-hour summer concert series known as Live Earth, taking place July 7th, 2007 across seven continents. She stood to Gore’s right during the announcement and answered reporters’ questions about her own green beliefs and hopes for the campaign.
“If [everyone] just changed one aspect of their life, if they just did one thing differently, that alone is a step closer to solving the problem,” says Diaz of the message the group is trying to deliver. “This problem can be solved.”
Eco Trippin
This MTV program follows Cameron and friends as they travel the world and learn about the importance of protecting the environment. From sandboarding, archery and rock climbing to releasing crocodiles and putting tracking collars on lions, the show is bound to get noticed by the younger crowd who watch and hopefully learn a few things from their idols. Even though some say the show overlooks poverty while glorifying the traditional ways of life, a positive message is still in there somewhere. And all the travel is offset with carbon credits.
Attracting green gossip
Cameron Diaz is one of a growing group of celebrities that are attracting the attention of “green” gossip websites and mainstream news outlets for something other than sensational or personally destructive exploits. In a feature on ABC News, Diaz spoke about the need for people to invest in green living and not just hop on board because it happens to be popular right now.
Dreams about green living
The one-time vegetarian has even been quoted as saying she’d like to try out simple country existence for a year, living off the land by growing her own food and milking cows, saying she thrives on being outdoors.
Media and the environment - and Cam
She says she sees celebrities drawing attention to issues and also credits movies like An Inconvenient Truth and March of the Penguins for raising awareness.
As a member of the Environmental Media Association, she has filmed public service announcements, with fellow greenie Gwyneth Paltrow, about the importance of conserving energy. The group’s Gen E (Generation Environment) program brings Hollywood and environmental concerns together, just like Diaz has in her own life.
