Clean, Green and Maid to Order
Eco-friendly cleaning companies
You love the idea of coming home to a spotless house courtesy of a cleaning company, but don’t like the lingering smell and airway irritation the cleaner’s chemicals can leave behind. Cleaning companies are becoming increasingly aware that although you’re too busy (or lazy) to be bothered with cleaning your home, it doesn’t mean you’re not concerned with what products are used to get the job done.
Green maid services are sprouting up across the country, offering a variety of cleaning products and service packages. Some are completely environmentally friendly, while others offer the option of green products for a premium, so if you’re concerned about the welfare of the company’s employees, choosing a company that bans harsh chemicals altogether might be a consideration. Some companies are more than happy to bend to the stickler’s needs, cleaning only with the quintessential natural ingredients like lemon juice, baking soda, olive oil and vinegar if requested. The services generally cost between $5 and $10 extra per hour if special and costlier products are used.
Avoiding cleaning products with ingredients such as ammonia, lye, chlorine, and more, the companies instead choose biodegradable and non-toxic supplies. Not only do you benefit by ridding your home of chemicals, you can sleep well knowing the workers who are directly exposed to the cleaners won’t suffer any ill fate.
High class cleaners
For a more upscale experience, a few provide turndown service, leave organic chocolates or treats behind, burn essentials oils while cleaning and apply fragrance to your bedding (the last two might be a deal breaker for those of the belief that clean doesn’t have a smell and no fragrance, no matter how essential the oil, should be burned or sprayed into the air).
Any company can say they are “green” cleaners, so be sure to ask what products they use and then gather a little background information to make sure everything is indeed nontoxic and meets your standards.
Then all that’s left to do is come home after a long day at work, jump into your organic cotton jammies and relax, breathing in the fresh air.
